Liberalised telecoms markets offer many opportunities for new entrants and incumbents. However these opportunities also bring significant challenges, with competition, regulation and technology developments placing considerable pressure on operators’ abilities to gain solid returns from existing and new markets.

Our approach to financial analysis is based on sound economic principles, coupled with an extensive knowledge of network characteristics, markets and cost drivers for telecoms services.

Evaluating an investment in mobile telecoms

The valuation of an investment and the estimation of likely future returns are crucial steps for investors seeking new acquisitions. This requires a detailed understanding of business drivers as well as an in-depth knowledge of market characteristics. We developed a comprehensive financial model of a mobile network operator that was used by a consortium of investors in seeking additional partners in the venture and for negotiation with the potential investment target.

Business case for migration to NGN

Network Strategies developed a business case model of a migration from a hypothetical legacy network to a Next Generation Network (NGN), based on a sample market with a simple set of voice and data services. Our model illustrated the difference between a proactive migration and an as-required migration. As a demonstration model, it was used to identify many of the key technological issues faced by operators when migrating to an NGN.

Assessing the opportunity for a regional triple-play operator

We reviewed a business plan for a new wired broadband network offering a complete range of retail telephony products, pay television services, high speed Internet and other data products with a focus on the consumer and SME markets. Our review included an assessment of the potential size of the target market and other sources of revenues, and the viability of the product offerings in the market. In addition to providing an independent validation of the business plan, we ensured that the assumptions and strategies embodied in the plan were appropriate for the marketplace.

Financial models of IP network

For a major global equipment manufacturer, we developed financial models for an operator’s backbone IP service that provides wholesale connections for ISPs and large enterprises, and an operator’s Voice over IP (VoIP) network. The models were used to support business cases for the operator and the manufacturer’s tender documents.
